Dear Colleague, The Gonzaga University Debate Program extends an invitation to you and your students to attend the 61st Conway Classic. The Classic is named in honor of Sister Margaret Mary Conway, former Director of Debate at Gonzaga University. Sister Conway is the major reason why Gonzaga has remained a perennial competitor in collegiate policy debate. Her commitment and dedication to forensics in the state of Washington served as a model for our entire community. The tournament will be held Friday - Sunday, March 5th - 7th on the campus of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. The only event offered at the Conway Spring Classic is Policy/CX debate. We will offer three divisions, Novice, JV and Open. The Conway Spring Classic is a TOC qualifying tournament in the semis of our open division. We intend to make this tournament a very special experience for the students attending. On Sunday morning there will be an awards breakfast on campus followed by a continuation of elimination rounds. Students who attend the tournament also receive a discount if they attend the Gonzaga Debate Institute. Additional logistical details are outlined below. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us at frappier@gem.gonzaga.edu. We look forward to hosting all of you in March for the Conway Spring Classic. Sincerely Glen Frappier Karina Momary

Entering the Tournament: Entries need to be entered online at www.debateresults.com Registering is simple and this will enable us to utilize an online pref system in Open. If your school does not have an account with debateresults.com then that is your first step in registering. Its free and you'll find it is incredibly easy to use the site. Entry Fees: Tournament fees will be $50 per team as well as a $25 school fee. So 1 team = $75, 2 teams = $125, etc. Tabroom: The tabroom will be run by Greg Achten and Glen Frappier. In accordance with Washington rules there will be high school coach(es) serving in the tabroom in an advisory capacity. Judging: Each School is expected to provide 3 rounds of qualified judging commitment for each team entered. There will be limited judging available to purchase through the tournament so if you need to hire rounds please tell us asap. First come first served. You will be required to submit a judging philosophy for each judge you are bringing to the tournament that will judge in the open division. Deadlines: The deadline for entering is March 1st, 2010. With our tournament just a few days away I wanted to send out an email with some important announcements and potential changes. If there is anything not covered below please do not hesitate to contact me at this email. 1 Please finalize entries on debateresults asap. We especially need your judges entered right away if you havent entered those. We would like to make prefs active in the next 2 days and its imperative all schools have entered their judges or made arrangements to hire judging 2 Judge preference sheets These will be activated either tomorrow evening or Wednesday morning. Just go to www.debateresults.com and on the tournament calendar you will see a prefs tab next to our tournament. If you click on this it will take you to the page to enter your teams prefs. When they go active I will send out an email to let you know you can start entering them. You will have until Thursday night (11:59pm) to complete these. Also if you have a judge entered who does not yet have a philosophy entered on debatersults.com please do that asap so the debaters and coaches can at least start thinking about their pref sheets. 3 Where to go when you arrive. Registration is at 4pm on Friday in College Hall 101. Campus maps can be found here. http://www.gonzaga.edu/About/campus-map.asp. Pairings for Rounds 1 and 2 will be released in College Hall (posted on doors and distributed from 101 at 4pm). The tabroom will operate out of 101 all weekend. Judges can also feel free to lounge in this room (refreshments available). 4 All debates will occur in College Hall and Jepson Center. All elimination rounds will be held in College Hall. 5 Schedule The schedule is below. There have been no major changes. It is questionable if there will be a double octafinal round on Saturday night. If there is NOT a doubles, we will run octas in that time slot. We will definitely clear all teams with a 4-2 record or better. If there are 16 or less 4-2s then we will clear to a full octa final round (to be held on Saturday at 8pm) with quarters scheduled as the first elim Sunday. However, if there are more than 16 teams with a record of 4-2 or better we will clear to a partial double octa final round (to be held on Saturday at 8pm) with octas scheduled as the first elim on Sunday. 6 Fees We lowered our fees thanks to donations from the College of Arts and Sciences at Gonzaga University. We got this posted on our website a couple weeks ago but thought some of you might not have noticed. Fees are now $50 per team plus a $25 school fee. So 1 team = $75, 2 teams = $125, 3 teams = $175, etc. If you hired judging from us the rate is $75 per uncovered teams. 7 Some information we need from you asap: Please send all of this information to Karina Momary at karina.momary@gmail.com a. T-shirt sizes: We are giving all competitors tournament t-shirts. In order to more accurately order these please send us t-shirt sizes (or best guesses) for your students. b. Vegetarians, vegans, or other meal restrictions that we can reasonably cater to. 8 Internet. All competitors, judges, and coaches will have wireless access while on campus. You do not need a username/password. Simply connect to the Gonzaga Guest Network. Please tell your students not to download large media files while on our network.
