The 2010 Jesuit Invitational
The West Coast Opener
Gonzaga University
Spokane, Washington
Saturday, September 11th - Monday, September 13th, 2010
Greetings,
The Gonzaga Debate Program invites you to attend the Jesuit Invitational Debate Tournament, held on the campus of Gonzaga University Saturday, September 11th - Monday, September 13th 2010. The Jesuit, which was first held at Gonzaga University in the late 1980s (then moved to St. Louis University and finally to Southern Illinois), was hosted from 1989-1998 by Greg Simerly (now of MTSU). The spirit of this tournament was always embodied in the outstanding competition (the Jesuit was the only RR in the country that you had to qualify for based on an objective system of points) and the first class, over the top hospitality. We have changed the format from a Round Robin to a full-scale tournament, but nothing has changed about our hospitality. Registration will begin at 7pm, Friday, September 10th at the Red Lion River Inn. Rounds begin Saturday, September 11th at 9:30am. Please note that we are breaking with tradition and having 4 rounds on Saturday with the final 2 prelims and double octas on Sunday. This allows us to get the doubles finished at a reasonable hour and still give all teams an evening off for a squad dinner or prep for Monday. We hope you'll join us in Spokane for another the opening of another NDT/CEDA season.
Entry Information:
We will be utilizing the Jon Bruschke online entry system. Online entry
can be accessed at
http://debateresults.com
Relevant Debate Information
We plan to offer 6 preliminary debates on the 2010-2011 CEDA/NDT topic (Visas)
in an Open and Junior Division. Adam Symonds (Arizona State) and Jon
Bruschke (CSU Fullerton) will direct our tabroom.
The time limits are 9-3-6 with 10 minutes prep.
Judges must assign a winner and loser in each round. If that doesn't occur
within a reasonable time frame the tab room will make a decision for you.
All teams with a 4-2 record will advance to elimination rounds.
All preliminary debates and double octas (most likely a partials) will occur on
campus. Octas through finals will be held at the River Inn on Monday.
Case Book
With the introduction of the Wiki a "case book" authored by the tournament staff
is a thing of the past. However, we will actively encourage, and even assist,
all teams in posting their argument disclosure to the Wiki shortly after the
tourney begins.
Fees
$125 per team. Fee's will cover hospitality (lunch on Saturday on Sunday
and bagles, coffee, and fruit on Sunday and Monday morning, as well as an open
hospitality room the campus with refreshments for debaters, coaches and judges.
Coaches will be invited to join us in the hospitality suite at the River Inn on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. There might be a Survivors Party on
Monday.
Judging
Each school is expected to provide 3 rounds of judging per team. Each judge will be obligated for one round beyond the elimination of
their team. We have some hired judges that we can provide, but not many. Hired
judges will be given on a first come, first served basis at a fee of $150 per
uncovered team. We would much rather have your judges than your money. We
plan on utilizing mutual preference judging. You will be able to enter
your preference sheets online at
www.debateresults.com.
Transportation
Those of you from the district know how to get here. For those of you
flying in, you should flight into the Spokane International Airport (GEG).
Most major airlines service Spokane. The hotel shuttle will pick you up at
the airport. For teams on tight budgets, you can likely do the whole
weekend without renting a vehicle with only minor inconveniences.
Everything (hotel, campus, fast food, kinkos (does anyone still go to
kinkos?), downtown restaurants and bars, etc) is within walking distance.
We will offer evidence transportation from the hotel for those teams walking
to the campus (5-10 minutes). We will move your evidence Saturday morning
and bring it back to the hotel Sunday night. This hotel is about a 5-10 minute
walk from the hotel along the river path.
Evidence Shuttle
We will provide an evidence shuttle from the River Inn on Saturday morning with
the return trip scheduled for Sunday night. If you plan on using our evidence
shuttle please contact Steve Pointer at
pointer@gem.gonzaga.edu.
