Welcome to the 2008 Gonzaga Debate Institute.  The GDI is the largest summer institute in the west and has earned a reputation as one of the top high school debate institutes in the nation. Last year over 180 students from 39 states attended programs at the GDI.  The GDI is sponsored by the Gonzaga University Debate Progam and all events are held on our beautiful campus in Spokane, Washington.

Regardless of your skill level, argument preference, or experience the GDI can help you achieve your goals. Whether those goals include winning your first novice tournament or winning the TOC the GDI can provide you a highly educational, extremely competitive and, most importantly, fun atmosphere for summer institute.

Once again, the GDI is proud to be a partner workshop with Planet Debate.com. As a partner workshop all GDI students will receive a gold subscription to planet debate during the institute and through September 1st. Visit www.planetdebate.com for more details on their gold subscription.

There are many reasons the GDI is the right choice for summer debate institute. Consider the following:

The Faculty:   The success of our institute is directly attributable to the hard work of our students under direction from one of the finest faculties in the nation. They are an experienced and proven group of debate educators who will make you a better debater.

Record of Success: The success of our alumni is a testament to the GDI experience. GDI debaters have advanced to deep elim rounds at most major national tournaments including the Glenbrooks, Berkeley, Redlands, St. Marks, and of course the TOC. In the northwest the GDI alum consistently win all the major tournaments including Whitman, Gonzaga, Auburn, and State. Many GDI alumni have also made their mark in college debate, earning first round bids and advancing to deep elim rounds at the NDT and CEDA Nationals.

Cost effective: The GDI is one of the best values you'll find among summer institutes Compare our costs to the other institutes of our size and quality and you'll quickly realize the GDI is the most cost effective institute in the nation.  Innovations such as the optional and partial meal plan as well as our extensive scholarship opportunities enable us to offer you a top tier institute experience for a lower tier cost.

Curriculum:

  • Students receive a large number of practice debates throughout GDI culminating in a 6 round tournament clearing to double octa finals. All rounds will be judge by qualified coaches and college debaters.

  • Self Selected Lecture Series - We offer multiple lectures and workshops that students can choose among.  Students actually have the opportunity to participate in designing their own curriculum.

  • One of the most comprehensive evidence sets anywhere in the nation. Students will receive an electronic copy of the evidence set as part of their tuition, as well as the option to purchase printed copies of the evidence set.

  • Multiple Program choices - We offer Varsity, Varsity Transition, Junior Varsity, and Novice programs.

Lots of Fun:

  • Laser Tag -  Students get the opportunity to shoot it out against each other and the esteemed faculty.
  • Faculty - Student Kickball Tournament - Despite a late rally the students lost to the faculty in the 2007 GDI Kickball Tournament. Better luck next year.
